Rediscovering Wonder: Lessons from Kindergarten

think deeply. It read:

“Everything I really need to know I learned in Kindergarten.”

Simple, right? But as we reflected on it together, something sacred stirred in me. We were asked to write down three truths from that poster that still speak to us today.

Here were my choices:

  • Be aware of wonder
  • Live a balanced life
  • Learn some and think some

And as I sat with these sweet, childlike reminders, I realized they hold more truth than I expected. Truth that aligns with how God designed us to live. Truth that shows up all throughout Scripture.

🧒 Kindergarten Wisdom Meets Kingdom Living

Let me share some of the other gems from that poster:

  • Share everything.
  • Play fair.
  • Don’t hit people.
  • Put things back where you found them.
  • Clean up your own mess.
  • Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
  • Say you’re sorry when you hurt someone.
  • Wash your hands before you eat. Flush.
  • Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
  • Take a nap every afternoon.
  • When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.
  • Be aware of wonder.
  • Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup—the roots go down and the plant goes up, and nobody really knows how or why. But we are all like that.
  • And remember the first word you learned—LOOK.

I couldn’t help but think… isn’t this how God wants us to live too?

✨ Faith Like a Child

Jesus told us plainly:

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
— Matthew 18:3 (NIV)

He wasn’t calling us to be childish—but childlike. Humble. Open. Soft-hearted. Teachable. In awe.

And when I reflect on the list from that poster, I see it:
Kindergarten values are Kingdom values.

  • “Play fair” speaks of justice.
  • “Say you’re sorry” is repentance.
  • “Share everything” is generosity.
  • “Hold hands and stick together” is the church.
  • “Be aware of wonder” is worship.
  • “Look” is spiritual awareness.

Even “Take a nap” is a reminder to rest—Sabbath.
Even “Wash your hands” points to stewardship and purity.

We complicate life as we grow older. But maybe spiritual maturity looks like rediscovering simplicity… returning to joy… slowing down to look again.

🌱 Devotional Reflection

What if we lived more like this again? What if we embraced wonder, created space for balance, and gave ourselves permission to learn, think, and rest?

Let’s ask ourselves:

  • What are three “kindergarten truths” I’ve forgotten to live out?
  • How would my life change if I practiced more wonder, balance, or kindness this week?
  • Where is God inviting me to LOOK more closely?

📖 Scripture Focus

Matthew 18:3 (NIV)
“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Micah 6:8 (NIV)
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Maybe everything we really need to know was taught in Kindergarten. But through God’s grace, we’re given the chance to remember those truths—not just with our heads, but with our hearts.

Let’s return to wonder.
Let’s hold hands and stick together.
Let’s LOOK—because there’s beauty and truth all around us… and the biggest miracles often begin in the smallest places.
